The Hausa language is classified as a Chadic language within the larger Afroasiatic language family. It serves as the primary means of communication for the Hausa people, who represent the largest indigenous ethnic group in Africa. The principal regions where Hausa is spoken include Niger and the northern areas of Nigeria, with notable populations also found in Ghana, Sudan, and Cameroon.

As the most widely spoken language in the Chadic branch of the Afroasiatic family, Hausa demonstrates significant linguistic influence. Recent estimates suggest that approximately 47 million individuals speak Hausa as their first language, while an additional 25 million use it as a second language, yielding a total of around 72 million speakers. More contemporary estimates indicate that the number could range between 100 to 150 million speakers, positioning Hausa as potentially the most spoken indigenous African language.
